Opelousas, Louisiana–For the second consecutive year Sadie’s Soldier ($10.00) unleashed a strong late rally to win the $50,000 John Henry Stakes for three-year-olds and up at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino on Saturday evening. Relaxed in the early stages and sitting in the second half of the field for most of the race, Sadie’s Soldier and jockey Diego Saenz rallied into contention on the final turn, taking command in mid-stretch, then drawing clear to win by more than five lengths covering the about one & one sixteenth on a turf course labeled firm in 1:42.91.
Bauers Got Hours, who was in contention throughout, grabbed the runner-up spot, a neck in front of longshot It Mr Slew to You who rallied from dead last in the twelve-horse field. The Tom Amoss trained Quality Control was next across the finish line, followed by entrymates Rules of Honor and Midnight Mischief. Watch My Smoke finished in 7th position, followed by Global Stage, Borego’s Barbarian, and Batter Up.
