Stronger Catalog Could Help F-T Texas Sale

Fasig-Tipton’s Texas sale of 2-year-olds in training, which is scheduled for March 30 beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT), has a stronger group of horses to offer, according to Tim Boyce, who oversees opertions in the Lone Star State for the Kentucky-based auction firm.

“I think we’ve got a much better catalog than we’ve had before,” he said. “I’m encouraged by the pedigrees and the individuals that have shown up here. An example of the strong pedigrees would be Hip No. 32, a Sky Mesa colt that is a half brother to a million-dollar earner (and grade II winner). We’re getting better sire power and better breeding all together coming out of Louisiana.”

Also in the book, which list 223 juveniles, are the offspring of such successful sires as Awesome Again Birdstone More Than Ready , andTiznow .

Other reasons for a positive outlook are better economic news nationally and some signs of stabilization, and even improvement, at Thoroughbred auctions earlier this year.

“At least the economy isn’t in free fall anymore, and the stock market is pretty positive,” Boyce said. “The Southwest has been a little bit stronger than the rest of the country financially because oil and gas and those types of things have been carrying us, and the Southwest purse structure has been getting better. Purses are going up in Arkansas at the end of the meet (at Oaklawn Park), and Louisiana purses are very strong. In Texas, there’s some optimisim because of the sale of Lone Star Park to the Chickasaws, which is a change that could translate to better success.”

Lone Star is the site of the Fasig-Tipton Texas sale. The surface of its track was “tweaked a little bit,” according to Boyce, and the change might have contributed to faster times during the auction’s under tack show.

Wildcat Heir – Always Freezing colt breezed an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5, and a Congrats – La Petite Justice filly covered a quarter mile in : 20 3/5. Last year the quickest times for the distances were :10 1/5 and :22.

The results for the 2009 edition of the auction included a gross of $2,477,000 for the 144 horses that sold. The average price was $17,201, and the median price was $9,650. The average was up less than 1% from the previous year, but the gross and median suffered downturns of 14.1% and 35.7%, respectively. The buy-back rate fell to 30.4% from 35.4% in 2008

All indicators down at Franks Memorial two-year-old sale

Total sales dropped 56.9% compared with 2009 at the John Franks Memorial two-year-old in training sale on March 22 in Opelousas, Louisiana.
Of the 134 horses that went through the ring, 66 were reported to have changed hands for total sales of $575,900. The buy-back rate was 50.7%, compared with 29.5% a year ago. Average dropped 7.9% to $8,726, and median dropped 1% to $4,950. Dorsey Farms paid $45,000 for the sale-topping K One King colt out of Buddy’s Mission, by Missionary Ridge (GB). Steve Crowe bred and consigned the sale topper, named Buddy’s Man. Dorsey Farms and Larry Romero tied for leading buyer honors with total purchases of $45,000. Ends Well Farm was the leading consignor with ten horses sold for $75,300. K One King was leading sire by average price, with two or more sold, with four sold for $20,750.

154 Two-Year-Olds offered in the John Franks Memorial Sale at Evangeline Downs
Opelousas, Louisiana-Veteran Sales administrator Stemmans Inc. has cataloged a total of 154 youngsters for the 2010 edition of the John Franks Memorial Two-Year-Old in Training Sale at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino. The Sale, now in its eighth year is scheduled for Sunday, March 21, beginning at 10:00 am Central time. That start time is two hours earlier than last year’s Noon start time. In addition to the new start time, the Sale this year will be held in a different location in the brand new Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino Event Center which is conveniently located adjacent to the prior site of the Sale, the racing paddock. In addition, there will be a Preview Gallop Show on Saturday, March 20, which will begin at Noon Central time. Both the Sale and the Preview Gallop Show are free and open to the public.

Charlotte Stemmans Clavier, President of Stemmans, Inc., Administrator for the Sale, states “Despite the current economy, we are cautiously optimistic about this year’s sale. While the majority of our catalog showcases our top locally based sires such as Leestown (the deceased son of Seattle Slew who has topped the state rankings on multiple occasions) and Storm Day (the ever popular son of Storm Cat) who are each represented by six offspring, we have two-year-olds from no less than 97 sires including progeny from popular and successful sires such as Touch Gold, Gilded Time, Valid Expectations, Sky Mesa, Songandaprayer, and Candy Ride as well as from several promising young sires including Ghostzapper, Lion Heart, Roman Ruler, Bandini, Value Plus, Lion Tamer, Mass Media, Leriodesanimaux, Congrats, Powerscourt, and Soto.” Clavier added “I truly believe this year’s Sale has something for everyone, with the racino infused purses and with the turf course now in place at Evangeline Downs, the consignors have responded with an overall upgrade in quality as well as the introduction of some serious turf oriented stallions and broodmare families which in my opinion will give the horsemen more options as they look to restock and retool their respective stables in preparation for the upcoming Spring/Summer meet at Evangeline Downs.”

Clavier also stated “Last year’s Sale featured a total of 199 two-year-olds that were sold for a total of $1,736,700 an average of $8,727.00. And while both of those totals were a decline from the 2008 Sale, we feel that the economic downtown that occurred during 2008/2009 played a strong part in that result. Reports from this year’s Juvenile Sales in Florida were encouraging and with the economy beginning to show signs of recovery we are looking forward to a successful event.”

As in past years, the Sale, named for the late Eclipse Award winning Owner/Breeder offers a pair of $100,000 races to be held at Evangeline Downs that are restricted to two-year-olds who pass through the sales ring. The two events will be held on consecutive nights, Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31 and will both be run at the distance of 5 ½ furlongs. Last year’s races were won by The Rumor’s True and Bailey’s Charm. The Rumor’s True, a Louisiana bred daughter of Kafwain was a $5,000 buyback for Vic Topper’s Northpointe Thoroughbreds, while Bailey’s Charm, a gelded son of Soto provided the father/son team of owner Lee Young and trainer Troy Young with their first victory in the Sales Stakes after several near misses.
